THE DANSES
The Maracatu
Originating in the African tribe of the BANTO, Maracatu is a ceremony during which selected slaves showed the heart of the kings and the queens blacks.
Maracatu could be practised since 1674 in the town of RECIFE in north east of Brazil (it will have been necessary 174 years so that the slaves can express their culture).
The procession left Senzala (barracks in which the slaves in the brasilian farms were placed) to the catholic foot of the churches, it was escorted by Capoeiristes
which opened the way through crowd. Each person of the procession has her role and of the step of dance specific to this one.
Nowadays the MARACATU is always practised, primarily in the town of RECIFE.
The steps of dance of the traditional MARACATU are taught by associations which contribute to preserve the culture resulting from the African roots.
Coco de Roda
This dance is practised with a small umbrella "A SOMBINHA" element complementary and essential in Capoeiristes which used it as a weapon
to attack and defend themselves since Capoeira was prohibited.
Nowadays the FREVO is practised at the time of Canaval, mainly that of RECIFE (coastal city in north east of Brazil), city in which this dance was
developed and perpetuated. The FREVO is mainly danced at the time of the regional festive gatherings and in the events of CAPOEIRA such as
the meetings, championships and Baptêmes.
